Acknowledge the Risk You Take When Wading into Unguarded Water

As the Summer season comes to a close, the risk of unintended drownings increases significantly, especially with the continuation of warm weather in Fall and hurricane season lasting through November.

AccuWeather predicts a “second summer” with elevated temperatures and increased storm activity, potentially reaching “near historic” levels.

For those venturing into unguarded waters, understanding the dangers beneath the surface is crucial.

Here are some tips to stay safe this Fall:

 – Stay informed about local weather and storm activity, as distant storms 1500 miles away impact our rip currents.

– Always have a plan before entering/exiting the water.

– Swim with a buddy, preferably someone with stronger swim skills, and have a shore watcher ready to call for help if needed.

– In case of trouble, stay calm, float on your back, and signal for assistance.

– Avoid groins and jetties to prevent being pulled into dangerous situations.

– Avoid sandbars which are not fixed structures; they can break underneath you.

-Get out of the water when you start to feel cold, tired or less than 100%.
