St. John’s Episcopal Hospital Encourages Healthy Eating Habits
Healthy eating and great taste are two phrases that don’t always go together. But at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital our culinary team is changing that. Working with our food service partner, Morrison, St.John’s Episcopal Hospital implemented a new wellness platform that offers an improved approach to healthy eating, one which comes with flavor-packed, nutritious meals and a new perspective on what we eat.

St. John’s Episcopal Hospital will implement the program in stages, with many changes already underway. Examples of changes that patients, staff and visitors can expect to see on patient meals trays, the coffee shop and the café include:
- Monthly wellness promotions focused on improving health through better nutrition
- A healthy FIT combo meal available every day
- Exclusive use of whole grain breads, rolls, buns and bagels well as whole grain or legume-based pasta
- Brown rice and whole grain sides and salads offered
- Reduced portion sizes of sugar-sweetened beverages
- Healthier beverage choices prominently displayed
- Increase in the percentage of fresh, seasonal and local produce
“We’re excited about this new platform, which will make healthy choices more accessible to our patients, staff and visitors as well as help them form new eating behaviors we hope they embrace when they leave the hospital, too,” said Lisa Emeka, Clinical Nutrition Manager, St.
John’s Episcopal Hospital “It’s just as much about changing the way people think about food as it is about changing what they eat when they’re here.”
